What Is Battery Storage?

A home battery storage system stores excess electricity generated by your solar panels during the day so you can use it in the evening and at night. Without a battery, a typical household uses only 30–50% of the solar energy they generate, with the rest exported to the grid at low rates. With a battery, self-consumption rises to 75%+, dramatically reducing the amount of expensive grid electricity you need to buy. Since February 2024, all battery installations attract 0% VAT — whether alongside solar panels, retrofitting to existing solar, or standalone — until March 2027. Modern battery systems like the FoxESS ECS, Tesla Powerwall 3, and Fogstar units include smart monitoring apps that let you track generation, storage, and usage in real-time. Batteries can also charge from the grid during off-peak overnight rates (as low as 7p/kWh on Octopus Go), providing further savings through tariff arbitrage.

Key Benefits

Benefits of Battery Storage

Maximise Solar Savings

Increase self-consumption from 30–50% to 75%+. A 4kW solar system with battery and smart tariff saves approximately £880–£1,030/yr vs ~£440 solar-only.

0% VAT on All Batteries

Since February 2024, ALL battery installations are 0% VAT — standalone, retrofit to existing solar, or alongside new solar — until March 2027.

Smart Tariff Arbitrage

Charge your battery at 7–8p/kWh overnight on Octopus Go or Intelligent, then use that stored energy during the day instead of buying at 24p+. Realistic saving: £300–£550/yr.

Smart Monitoring

Track generation, storage, and consumption via smartphone apps. FoxESS offers an open API for Home Assistant and other smart home integration.

Backup Power

FoxESS systems offer whole-home backup via an EPS add-on with sub-20ms switchover. Tesla Powerwall 3 delivers 11kW continuous output for whole-home backup.

Export Earnings Strategy

Batteries enable export at peak SEG rates using Octopus Flux (peak export ~22–28p/kWh). Average Flux household earns ~£378/yr from exports.

Battery Storage Costs

A 5kWh home battery system costs approximately £3,000–£4,500 installed alongside solar (£4,500–£6,000 standalone retrofit). A 9.5kWh system costs £4,500–£7,000 with solar. The Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh, built-in inverter) costs £7,500–£11,500 installed. All battery installations attract 0% VAT until March 2027. Most battery systems pay for themselves within 5–7 years through increased solar self-consumption and smart tariff savings. We help you choose the right capacity based on your solar system size, electricity usage patterns, and preferred tariff strategy.

A Battery Is Most Valuable with Solar Panels

A battery on its own can save money on time-of-use tariffs, but the real savings come from combining it with solar. Together they can save £1,600+ per year on a typical home.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

01
Is a battery worth it with solar panels?
A battery significantly increases the value of your solar panels. Without a battery, you typically use only 30–50% of the solar energy you generate — the rest is exported to the grid at 15–25p/kWh. With a battery, self-consumption rises to 70–90%, meaning you use your own free solar energy instead of paying 24.67p/kWh from the grid. A 9.5kWh battery system costs £4,500–£7,000 installed (at 0% VAT). In Cornwall, battery storage typically pays back in 5–7 years.
02
How long do home batteries last?
Modern lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) home batteries — including Foxstar and Tesla Powerwall — are warranted for 10 years and designed to last 15+ years. LiFePO4 chemistry is the safest, most stable battery chemistry available, with no thermal runaway risk and excellent long-term capacity retention.
03
Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?
Yes, batteries can be retrofitted to any existing solar PV system. We install AC-coupled battery systems (such as the Foxstar or Tesla Powerwall) alongside your current inverter, compatible with any solar system regardless of age. A retrofit typically takes 1 day and we handle all DNO notifications. The 0% VAT rate applies to battery storage installed alongside solar.
04
Can a battery provide backup power during a power cut?
Yes — some home batteries including the Tesla Powerwall and certain Foxstar configurations provide backup power during a grid outage, automatically switching to battery power when the grid fails. This is a particularly useful feature for rural properties in Cornwall where power cuts can occur. Not all batteries include backup as standard, so we advise on this when recommending a system.
05
What is the best battery to buy with solar panels?
Foxstar and Tesla Powerwall are our most frequently installed systems. Foxstar offers excellent value, strong UK customer support, and modular capacity. Tesla Powerwall has a sleeker design, excellent software, and strong backup power features. The right choice depends on your budget, whether backup power matters to you, and whether you want to expand capacity in future. We install both and provide impartial advice.
