How Solar Panels Work

Solar panels convert daylight into electricity that powers your home. Mounted on your roof, they generate free, clean electricity during daylight hours. Cornwall receives approximately 1,298 kWh/m² of solar irradiance per year — 19% above the UK national average — making it one of the best solar regions in the country. A typical 4kW system in Cornwall generates around 3,800–4,200 kWh per year, compared to just 3,400 kWh nationally. That's enough to cover a significant proportion of a household's annual electricity consumption. Any excess electricity can be exported to the grid for payment under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), with the best tariffs currently paying up to 25p/kWh. Since April 2022, residential solar panels attract 0% VAT (saving 20% on the total cost) — this applies until March 2027. Most Cornwall systems pay back within 7–9 years, significantly better than the national average, with panels continuing to generate for 25–30 years.

Key Benefits

Benefits of Solar Panels

0% VAT Until March 2027

No VAT on residential solar panel and battery installations, saving 20% on the total cost — typically £1,000–£3,000 on a solar-plus-battery package.

Cornwall's Outstanding Solar Resource

Cornwall generates 19% more solar energy than the UK average. A 4kW system here generates ~3,800–4,200 kWh/yr vs ~3,400 nationally, with payback around 8.6 years.

Smart Export Guarantee Income

Earn up to 25p/kWh for surplus electricity exported to the grid — completely tax-free for residential installations. A typical 4.6kWp system earns around £171/yr.

Pair with Battery Storage

Increase self-consumption from 30–50% to 75%+ with a battery. Combined with a time-of-use tariff, annual savings can reach £880–£1,030 for a 4kW system.

Increase Property Value

Homes with solar panels sell for more and achieve better EPC ratings. Buyers value lower energy bills and green credentials.

25–30 Year Lifespan

Modern n-Type TOPCon panels carry 25–30 year performance warranties with low annual degradation of 0.3–0.5%. Your system keeps generating long after payback.

Solar Panel Costs in Cornwall

A 4kW residential solar panel system (10–12 panels) costs £6,000–£8,000 installed in Cornwall, with 0% VAT until March 2027. A 6kW system costs £8,500–£12,000. Adding a 9.5kWh battery storage system adds approximately £4,500–£7,000. Cornwall's exceptional solar irradiance means payback is around 8.6 years for solar-only and approximately 7.2 years with a battery. Note: China ended its 9% solar panel export rebate in April 2026, so panel prices may rise 8–15% over the next 6–12 months — buying now locks in current pricing before any increase. Store Your Solar and Use It in the Evening

Without a battery, you export surplus solar energy for just 5-15p/kWh. With one, you store it and use it at night instead of paying 30p+/kWh. Self-consumption rises from ~35% to ~85%.

Charge Your Electric Car on Free Solar Power

A Zappi smart charger diverts surplus solar energy to your car instead of exporting it for a fraction of the price. Most customers cover 50-70% of their EV charging with solar.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

01
How much do solar panels cost in the UK?
A typical 4kW residential solar panel system costs £6,000–£8,000 in Cornwall including installation and 0% VAT (saving you 20% on the total cost). A 6kW system costs £8,500–£12,000. Cornwall generates 3,800–4,200 kWh/year from a 4kW system — 19% above the UK average — giving a typical payback of around 8.6 years solar-only, or 7.2 years with battery storage. Annual savings are typically £700–£1,000.
02
Do solar panels work on cloudy days in the UK?
Yes, solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine. They produce less on overcast days — typically 10–25% of peak output — but they still work. The UK gets enough sunlight for solar to be a sound investment, with average systems generating 3,500–4,500 kWh per year depending on location and roof orientation.
03
How many solar panels do I need?
The number of panels depends on your electricity usage and available roof space. A typical UK household uses 3,500–4,500 kWh per year, which a 10–12 panel system (4–5kW) can offset. If you're adding an EV charger or battery, you'll want a larger system. We assess your usage and roof during the free survey to recommend the right size.
04
What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for excess solar electricity you export to the grid. Best current rates (April 2026): Good Energy at 25p fixed, Octopus Intelligent Flux averaging ~25p (32p peak for battery owners), EDF Empower Export at 18p, and British Gas at 15.1p. We register you for the SEG as part of your installation. With a battery, you can store daytime solar generation and export strategically when rates are highest.
05
Will solar panels damage my roof?
No. Solar panels are mounted on rails attached to your roof battens with hooks that slide under existing tiles. No tiles are removed or drilled through. The mounting system is weatherproof and the panels actually protect the tiles beneath from rain and UV damage. We inspect your roof structure during the survey to confirm it can take the additional weight (around 20kg per panel).
