Daikin vs Mitsubishi vs Vaillant: Which Heat Pump Brand Is Best?

By CCS Heating & Renewables 10 min read

As installers of heat pumps from Daikin, Mitsubishi, and Vaillant, we are regularly asked which brand is best. All three are excellent, but each has strengths that make it more suitable for certain properties.

How the Three Brands Compare

As installers of air source heat pumps from Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, and Vaillant, we are regularly asked which brand is best. The honest answer is that all three are excellent — but each has strengths that make it more suitable for certain properties and customer priorities.

The table below summarises the key differences, and the sections below go into more detail on each brand.

Daikin Heat Pumps

Daikin is the world's largest HVAC manufacturer and produces the Altherma 3 range, one of the most widely installed heat pumps in the UK. Daikin heat pumps have an excellent reputation for reliability and quiet operation.

  • Efficiency: The Altherma 3 achieves a SCOP of 4.28 at A7/W35 in the 8 kW model — among the best in its class for a moderate climate like Cornwall.
  • Range: Available from 4 kW to 16 kW (monobloc), with a split system for larger outputs. Suitable for most domestic properties.
  • Controls: The Daikin MMI (Man Machine Interface) controller is simple and reliable. Integration with the Daikin app (Madoka) is available for remote monitoring.
  • Noise: One of the quietest heat pumps in its class at 50–54 dB(A), which matters in conservation areas and terraced properties.
  • Cost: Typically mid-range priced. Parts and service engineers are widely available.
  • Warranty: 5-year standard with MCS installation, extendable with service plans.

Daikin is our most commonly installed heat pump and our first recommendation for standard domestic replacements where noise, reliability, and proven performance are the priority.

Mitsubishi Electric Heat Pumps

Mitsubishi Electric produces the Ecodan range, which has been installed in the UK since 2009 and has an exceptional reliability record. The Ecodan is particularly popular with heating engineers who prioritise long-term performance over initial cost.

  • Efficiency: The R32 Ecodan achieves SCOP of up to 4.49 at A7/W35 in optimal conditions — slightly ahead of Daikin at lower ambient temperatures.
  • Range: Available from 5 kW to 16 kW for domestic use, with higher outputs for commercial properties. The R290 (propane) range is available for low-GWP requirements.
  • Controls: The MELCloud online controller is one of the best in the industry — detailed data logging, remote control, and smart tariff integration.
  • Noise: Slightly louder than Daikin at 53–57 dB(A) depending on model, but still well within planning constraints.
  • Cold weather performance: The Ecodan range is notable for maintaining output at lower temperatures — down to -25°C. Relevant in exposed, elevated Cornish locations.
  • Warranty: 5 years standard, up to 7 years with extended service plan.

We recommend the Mitsubishi Ecodan for larger properties with higher heat demands, exposed locations, and customers who want detailed performance data from their system.

Vaillant Heat Pumps

Vaillant is one of Europe's largest boiler and heat pump manufacturers and produces the arotherm+ range, which has seen significant improvements in recent years. Vaillant is particularly well-suited to hybrid heating systems and properties with existing Vaillant boilers.

  • Efficiency: The arotherm+ achieves SCOP of up to 5.0 at A7/W35 at the 5 kW model — one of the highest efficiency ratings in the market for smaller homes.
  • Range: Available from 5 kW to 15 kW (monobloc) with a Split version for larger outputs. The arotherm split provides the widest heat pump range.
  • Hybrid compatibility: Vaillant leads on hybrid systems — the arotherm+ is specifically designed to work alongside a Vaillant boiler, allowing intelligent switching between gas and heat pump depending on efficiency conditions.
  • Controls: The sensoHOME and sensoAPP controller system provides excellent room-by-room control and smart tariff integration.
  • Noise: 53–58 dB(A) depending on model and output — similar to Mitsubishi.
  • Warranty: 5 years standard, extendable. Vaillant offer a 7-year warranty when installed by an approved Vaillant Advance installer.

We recommend Vaillant for new builds, larger high-specification properties, and any customer interested in a hybrid system to ease the transition from gas.

Which Brand is Right for Your Home?

Our recommendation depends on your specific circumstances:

  • Standard domestic replacement (3–4 bed, semi or terrace): Daikin Altherma 3 for its reliability, quiet operation, and competitive price point.
  • Larger property or exposed rural location: Mitsubishi Ecodan for its cold weather performance and comprehensive data logging.
  • New build, high-spec renovation, or hybrid transition: Vaillant arotherm+ for its exceptional efficiency at lower outputs and best-in-class hybrid compatibility.
  • Oil-to-heat-pump switch in a large stone cottage: Any of the three will work — we will size the system and make our recommendation based on your specific heat loss calculation.

In practice, the heat pump brand matters less than the quality of the installation design. A correctly sized, well-installed Daikin will outperform a poorly designed Vaillant every time. This is why we start every project with a detailed heat loss assessment rather than recommending equipment from a catalogue.
