What Is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An air source heat pump (ASHP) extracts heat energy from the outside air and uses it to warm your home and hot water. Even when temperatures drop below freezing, modern heat pumps work efficiently to provide comfortable, consistent heating. They replace your existing boiler and connect to your radiators or underfloor heating, running on electricity rather than gas or oil. For every 1kW of electricity consumed, a well-designed heat pump delivers 3–4kW of heat energy — a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 3–4, meaning 300–400% efficiency. At Q2 2026 energy prices (electricity 24.67p/kWh, gas 5.74p/kWh), an ASHP running at COP 3.5 delivers heat at 7.05p/kWh — directly comparable to a 92% efficient gas boiler at 6.24p/kWh, and significantly cheaper than oil or LPG heating. With the government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme offering £7,500 towards installation costs, and Cornwall having over 35,000 off-gas homes eligible for grants, there has never been a better time to make the switch. As Gas Safe registered and HIES accredited installers, we ensure your system qualifies for the grant and is designed to deliver optimal performance for your specific property.

Key Benefits

Benefits of a Heat Pump

£7,500 BUS Grant

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers a significant portion of installation costs until March 2028. We handle the entire application process — the grant is deducted directly from your invoice.

Running Costs Comparable to Gas

At COP 3.5 and current electricity prices, heat pump heating costs 7.05p/kWh — comparable to gas and far cheaper than oil or LPG. With a smart tariff like Octopus Cosy at 7p overnight, annual heating bills can drop to around £240.

Reduce Carbon Emissions

No on-site combustion means zero direct carbon emissions. Heat pumps produce around 80% fewer CO₂ emissions than gas boilers based on the current UK grid mix.

Future-Proof Your Home

Gas boilers are banned in new builds from 2025 onwards. A heat pump future-proofs your home, improves your EPC rating, and adds buyer appeal.

Quiet Operation

Modern units operate at 37–54dB — Samsung's EHS Quiet is the industry leader at just 35dB. Our careful siting minimises any impact on neighbours.

Supplier-Neutral Brand Choice

We fit Mitsubishi Ecodan (SCOP up to 4.2, ~58dB, 7yr warranty — proven all-rounder), Daikin Altherma (SCOP up to 4.5, ~52dB, 7yr — strong cold-weather output), and Vaillant aroTHERM Plus (SCOP up to 4.6, ultra-quiet ~54dB Quiet Mark, up to 10yr, R290 refrigerant for 75°C flow). We recommend the right unit for your home, not the one with the biggest margin.

Suits Off-Gas, Granite & Coastal Homes

Cornwall has 35,000+ off-gas homes where a heat pump beats oil/LPG on running cost. High-flow R290 units (e.g. Vaillant aroTHERM Plus, 75°C) suit hard-to-insulate granite and solid-wall properties, and corrosion-resistant coatings are specified for coastal salt-air sites near Falmouth and Penzance.

Long Lifespan

Heat pumps typically last 20–25 years with minimal maintenance, compared to 10–15 years for a gas boiler, making the total cost of ownership very competitive.

Heat Pump Costs & the £7,500 BUS Grant

A typical air source heat pump installation costs between £8,000 and £14,000 before the grant, depending on system size and property requirements. Indicative Cornwall pricing by property: a 1–2 bed flat or small terrace needs roughly a 5kW unit at £8,000–£9,500 before grant (£500–£2,000 after the £7,500 BUS), with annual running cost around £450–£650; a 3-bed semi typically needs an 8kW unit at £10,000–£12,000 before grant (£2,500–£4,500 after BUS), running around £650–£950 a year; a 4-bed detached usually needs 11–14kW at £12,000–£16,000 before grant (£4,500–£8,500 after BUS), running around £900–£1,300 a year. The average homeowner pays around £5,000 after the grant (government statistics, July 2025). Prices include the heat pump unit, hot water cylinder, any necessary radiator upgrades, controls, and full MCS certification. The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant applies to BOTH air-source and ground-source heat pumps; to qualify you need a valid EPC (no minimum rating), must own the property, and must be replacing a fossil-fuel heating system. We check your eligibility during the free home survey and handle the entire grant application on your behalf — the grant is deducted directly from your invoice. Domestic heat-pump installations also benefit from 0% VAT until March 2027.
