The Challenge
The existing solar system had no battery and used a standard string inverter. The customer had recently bought an electric vehicle and was concerned about the cost of home charging — particularly in the evenings when they returned from work. They wanted a joined-up system that would use solar intelligently for both the battery and the EV.
Our Solution
We installed a 9.5 kWh Foxstar All-in-One battery using AC coupling (compatible with any solar system), and paired it with an Ohme ePod EV charger. The Ohme connects to the Foxstar system via its API, allowing intelligent scheduling: solar fills the battery during the day, and the car charges from the battery in the evening. On days with poor solar generation, both devices switch to cheap overnight grid electricity via the Octopus Intelligent tariff.
The Outcome
In the first month of operation, the customer sourced 85% of their car's charging from either solar or cheap overnight grid electricity, paying an average of 6p/kWh for car charging vs the standard 30p/kWh rate. The battery has increased household self-consumption from 41% to 79%. Combined annual savings are estimated at over £1,300.
