The Challenge
The property had an original Cornish slate roof with some fragile and uneven tiles. Standard solar mounting systems are not compatible with slate — specialist slate hooks had to be used, and the roof needed a thorough structural inspection before proceeding.
Our Solution
We carried out a structural assessment and used slate-specific mounting hooks that slide under existing slates without removal or drilling. The 10 × JA Solar 400W panels were installed on a south-facing slope with a pitch of 38°, ideal for solar generation in Cornwall.
The Outcome
The system is estimated to generate 3,800 kWh per year — slightly above the UK average, reflecting Cornwall's stronger solar resource. The customer qualifies for SEG payments and estimates an annual saving of £900-£1,000 on electricity bills, giving a payback period of around 7 years.
