The Challenge
The property was a typical 1960s semi — cavity walls, double glazing, a mix of original and replacement radiators. The customer was on a fixed-rate gas tariff and wasn't sure whether a heat pump would be cheaper to run in the short term. They also had a combi boiler with no hot water cylinder, so a cylinder installation was required.
Our Solution
Our heat loss assessment showed the property had good fabric performance for its age. Most of the existing radiators were adequately sized for 45°C flow temperature, with just three needing replacement. We installed a 5 kW Mitsubishi Ecodan with a new 210-litre Megaflo unvented cylinder in the airing cupboard. The customer switched to an Octopus Cosy tariff to benefit from cheaper off-peak electricity during afternoon periods.
The Outcome
The first full month's electricity bill for heating was £67, compared to £108 for gas the previous March. With the Cosy tariff discount and the heat pump's high efficiency in mild spring weather, the system exceeded our projections. The customer reports the house feels warmer and more evenly heated than it did with the combi boiler.
