Solar Panel Installation for Carlyon Bay Homes

Carlyon Bay is arguably the finest solar location in our service area. South-facing properties looking directly over the English Channel, no shading from neighbouring buildings, and large unobstructed roof areas on executive detached homes — it's a solar installer's ideal project. Annual irradiance of 1,300 kWh/m² is consistently above the Cornwall average.

What systems suit Carlyon Bay properties

Detached 4–5 bedroom homes here typically have 250–400m² of roof area. South and southwest roof spans of 60–100m² can accommodate 16–26 panels, generating 8,000–14,000 kWh per year — enough to power the home completely in summer and contribute substantially in shoulder months. A 10–16kWp system is the right specification for the larger properties in the gated developments and cliff-top positions.

Battery storage is a natural complement here. Properties with large solar arrays and off-peak tariffs can charge batteries from both solar and cheap overnight grid electricity, then run the home from stored power through peak evening hours. A GivEnergy 13.5kWh or Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh) is the most common pairing we install in Carlyon Bay. Our guide to the Octopus Flux strategy is particularly relevant for these high-energy properties.

No planning constraints

Carlyon Bay has no conservation area, no AONB designation within the residential zone, and no listed building stock. Solar installation here is straightforward permitted development for virtually every property — no planning applications, no heritage consultations. From survey to installation is typically 3–6 weeks.

Combined solar and heat pump

We install solar as part of combined solar + heat pump projects frequently in Carlyon Bay. The solar covers the heat pump's summer electricity consumption nearly in full, dramatically improving the 10-year economics of the combined system. Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Solar Panels in Carlyon Bay

01
How much do solar panels cost in the UK?
A typical 4kW residential solar panel system costs £6,000–£8,000 in Cornwall including installation and 0% VAT (saving you 20% on the total cost). A 6kW system costs £8,500–£12,000. Cornwall generates 3,800–4,200 kWh/year from a 4kW system — 19% above the UK average — giving a typical payback of around 8.6 years solar-only, or 7.2 years with battery storage. Annual savings are typically £700–£1,000.
02
Do solar panels work on cloudy days in the UK?
Yes, solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine. They produce less on overcast days — typically 10–25% of peak output — but they still work. The UK gets enough sunlight for solar to be a sound investment, with average systems generating 3,500–4,500 kWh per year depending on location and roof orientation.
03
How many solar panels do I need?
The number of panels depends on your electricity usage and available roof space. A typical UK household uses 3,500–4,500 kWh per year, which a 10–12 panel system (4–5kW) can offset. If you're adding an EV charger or battery, you'll want a larger system. We assess your usage and roof during the free survey to recommend the right size.
04
What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for excess solar electricity you export to the grid. Best current rates (April 2026): Good Energy at 25p fixed, Octopus Intelligent Flux averaging ~25p (32p peak for battery owners), EDF Empower Export at 18p, and British Gas at 15.1p. We register you for the SEG as part of your installation. With a battery, you can store daytime solar generation and export strategically when rates are highest.
05
Will solar panels damage my roof?
No. Solar panels are mounted on rails attached to your roof battens with hooks that slide under existing tiles. No tiles are removed or drilled through. The mounting system is weatherproof and the panels actually protect the tiles beneath from rain and UV damage. We inspect your roof structure during the survey to confirm it can take the additional weight (around 20kg per panel).
