Battery Storage for Wadebridge Homes

Battery Storage in Wadebridge: Cornwall's Highest Solar-Penetration Town

Wadebridge (PL27) has the highest concentration of installed solar in our whole service area. The community energy group WREN put solar on roughly 500 homes here during the feed-in-tariff era — around 10% of all properties in the town. That means Wadebridge has more homes primed for a battery upgrade than almost anywhere in North Cornwall. Many of those arrays date from the 2011–2016 boom, when batteries were still too expensive to add; today a battery retrofit is a half-day job that turns exported units into stored, self-consumed ones. CCS Heating & Renewables installs Foxstar, Tesla Powerwall and FoxESS systems across Wadebridge, the Cornish Quarter, Nanstallon and the surrounding PL27 villages.

Why the Numbers Work Here

Adding a battery to an existing solar system lifts self-consumption from a typical 30–40% to 70–90%. At Wadebridge's ~1,295 kWh/m2/year irradiance — comfortably above the UK average — a 4kWp array pairs naturally with a 5–10kWh battery. For a typical Wadebridge household that means an extra £450–£700 a year saved versus solar alone. On a time-of-use tariff such as Octopus Agile or Flux, the battery also charges from the grid at cheap overnight rates and discharges at peak — useful arbitrage on the many days the North Cornwall sky is overcast.

Off-Gas Wadebridge: Closing the Energy Loop

65% of Wadebridge homes are off the mains gas grid — one of the highest off-gas rates of any town we serve. Households here run oil, LPG or increasingly a heat pump. Battery storage closes the loop on that setup: solar generates free electricity, the battery stores it, and the heat pump or immersion draws stored solar instead of buying grid power at peak rate. For the rural detached properties and 1970s bungalows around Nanstallon and out towards St Breock, where oil deliveries are the main heating cost, that combination materially cuts running costs.

Property Types We Fit

  • Conservation-area period buildings (town centre, The Platt): batteries mount indoors in a garage, utility room or plant space, so there is no external visual impact — important within Wadebridge's protected core.
  • 1970s bungalows and semis: accessible plant space and existing solar make these among our quickest installs.
  • Cornish Quarter new-builds: many already have solar; a battery is a natural add-on with a single set of DNO notifications.
  • Rural detached & smallholdings: larger roofs, larger arrays, and higher self-consumption from heat pumps and EV charging.

SEG, VAT and DNO Handled for You

Battery storage installed alongside solar qualifies for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and export is paid through the Smart Export Guarantee. We handle the G99 DNO notification, MCS certification and zero-rating as standard. Battery storage is permitted development for domestic use. To compare system sizes and payback, see our guide to battery storage in Cornwall. We are 14 miles from Wadebridge and cover the full PL27 area.

What Our Customers Say

Google
"Added a Foxstar battery to our existing solar panels. CCS fitted it in a single day and now we use almost all of our solar generation ourselves. The app monitoring is fantastic too — I can see exactly where every unit goes."

"Had underfloor heating installed as part of our extension and paired it with a heat pump. The combination works brilliantly — every room is a consistent, comfortable temperature. CCS designed the whole system and managed everything."

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Battery Storage in Wadebridge

01
Is a battery worth it with solar panels?
A battery significantly increases the value of your solar panels. Without a battery, you typically use only 30–50% of the solar energy you generate — the rest is exported to the grid at 15–25p/kWh. With a battery, self-consumption rises to 70–90%, meaning you use your own free solar energy instead of paying 24.67p/kWh from the grid. A 9.5kWh battery system costs £4,500–£7,000 installed (at 0% VAT). In Cornwall, battery storage typically pays back in 5–7 years.
02
How long do home batteries last?
Modern lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) home batteries — including Foxstar and Tesla Powerwall — are warranted for 10 years and designed to last 15+ years. LiFePO4 chemistry is the safest, most stable battery chemistry available, with no thermal runaway risk and excellent long-term capacity retention.
03
Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?
Yes, batteries can be retrofitted to any existing solar PV system. We install AC-coupled battery systems (such as the Foxstar or Tesla Powerwall) alongside your current inverter, compatible with any solar system regardless of age. A retrofit typically takes 1 day and we handle all DNO notifications. The 0% VAT rate applies to battery storage installed alongside solar.
04
Can a battery provide backup power during a power cut?
Yes — some home batteries including the Tesla Powerwall and certain Foxstar configurations provide backup power during a grid outage, automatically switching to battery power when the grid fails. This is a particularly useful feature for rural properties in Cornwall where power cuts can occur. Not all batteries include backup as standard, so we advise on this when recommending a system.
05
What is the best battery to buy with solar panels?
Foxstar and Tesla Powerwall are our most frequently installed systems. Foxstar offers excellent value, strong UK customer support, and modular capacity. Tesla Powerwall has a sleeker design, excellent software, and strong backup power features. The right choice depends on your budget, whether backup power matters to you, and whether you want to expand capacity in future. We install both and provide impartial advice.
