Solar PV Upgrade & Fox Battery Preserving FIT, Polruan

A twin-system solar upgrade on a large detached home on the Polruan hillside above the Fowey estuary. The homeowner's original Feed-in Tariff array had reached the end of its life, so we replaced it like-for-like to preserve their FIT income — and added a completely separate new solar and battery system to cut bills further. In total, 23 new AIKO All Black panels were installed across the two systems, around 10.7 kW combined.

The Challenge

The original 15 × 245W FIT array (approx. 3.7 kW) had failed. The challenge with any FIT replacement is that the Feed-in Tariff scheme closed to new applicants in 2019 — existing recipients keep their payments for the remainder of their 20–25 year term only while the system is maintained. Replacing a failed array with a materially different capacity, or failing to notify the FIT licensee, can jeopardise those grandfathered payments, so the like-for-like design had to be handled with care.

Our Solution

We replaced the failed FIT array like-for-like with 8 × 465W AIKO All Black panels (approx. 3.7 kW) on a Fox ESS 3.6 kW string inverter, matching the original capacity so the homeowner's Feed-in Tariff continues undisturbed. Alongside it, we installed a separate new system: 15 × 465W AIKO All Black panels (approx. 7 kW) with a Fox ESS UK 5 kW three-phase hybrid inverter and Fox EP12 battery storage, so surplus generation is stored rather than exported.

The Outcome

The homeowner continues to receive their valuable, grandfathered Feed-in Tariff income from the like-for-like replacement array, while the new 7 kW solar and Fox EP12 battery system reduces their electricity bills and raises self-consumption by storing daytime generation for evening use. The result is greater energy independence without giving up the FIT payments they had built up over the years.
