How arbitrage works
Modern smart tariffs give you off-peak import windows at 7-15p/kWh and export windows at 25-32p/kWh. With a battery, you import at the cheap rate, store it, and either consume it during expensive periods (saving the unit cost) or export it at the high rate (earning the spread). Combined with solar, you maximise both self-consumption AND export value. Figures based on Octopus tariffs as of May 2026 — actual returns vary with weather, occupancy and tariff changes.
