Solar Panel Installation for St Ives Homes

Solar Panels in St Ives: A Conservation-Sensitive Solar Market

St Ives is Cornwall's most internationally famous coastal town — home to the Tate St Ives, the Barbara Hepworth Museum, and one of the largest conservation areas in Cornwall covering the entire historic core. With around 11,000 permanent residents and approximately 40% of the housing stock operating as holiday lets, the solar market here is unusual — both owner-occupier homes and the substantial holiday-let economy invest in solar PV. CCS Heating & Renewables installs across TR26 from our Pool office, 10 miles away.

Solar Generation in St Ives

St Ives receives approximately 1,295 kWh/m²/year of solar irradiance — around 19% above the UK average. A standard 4kWp system here generates 3,500–3,800 kWh annually, with payback typically achieved in 8–11 years. The premium coastal properties at Carbis Bay and Lelant frequently install 6–10kWp systems generating 5,500–8,500 kWh/year.

Best Property Types for Solar in St Ives

  • Downalong & Upalong granite cottages: Substantial conservation area. Listed buildings require listed building consent; conservation area consent required for elevation-visible installations on non-listed properties. Typically 3–4kWp on rear roof slopes only. CCS handles the planning paperwork.
  • Carbis Bay premium coastal properties: South-facing aspects across St Ives Bay, large roofs. 6–10kWp arrays paired with Tesla Powerwall 3 typical. Excellent install-cost-to-yield ratio.
  • Lelant family housing: Generous south-facing roof areas, often unshaded. 10–14 panel arrays standard.
  • Trewyn Estate & Higher Stennack modern housing: Solar-ready by design under Cornwall Council Climate Emergency DPD.
  • Holiday-let cottages: Increasingly installed by owners — solar PV reduces operating costs and improves booking-platform sustainability ratings. Conservation area considerations apply.

The Conservation Area Challenge

St Ives has one of the largest conservation areas in Cornwall, covering the entire historic core (Downalong, Upalong, the harbour). Solar installations on visible elevations are tightly controlled. CCS Heating & Renewables prepares listed building consent applications and conservation area consent applications as part of the project — typically positioning solar on rear roof slopes invisible from the public realm. See our Cornwall planning guide for the full process.

Holiday-Let Economy & Solar

St Ives has approximately 40% holiday-let occupancy across its housing stock — one of the highest concentrations in the UK. Solar PV on holiday-let cottages reduces operating costs, improves booking-platform sustainability ratings, and provides SEG export income during low-occupancy winter months. CCS Heating & Renewables works with several local holiday-let management companies on portfolio-wide installations.

Carbis Bay & the Premium Coastal Market

The premium coastal properties at Carbis Bay (which hosted the G7 summit in 2021) represent the highest-value solar market in St Ives. Average property values here are well above £700,000. South-facing aspects across St Ives Bay support 6–10kWp arrays paired with Tesla Powerwall 3 batteries — total annual savings of £1,200–£1,800 are typical.

Solar + Battery in St Ives

Adding a battery lifts self-consumption from around 35% to 80%+, saving £400–£700/year. We install with 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Solar Panels in St Ives

01
How much do solar panels cost in the UK?
A typical 4kW residential solar panel system costs £6,000–£8,000 in Cornwall including installation and 0% VAT (saving you 20% on the total cost). A 6kW system costs £8,500–£12,000. Cornwall generates 3,800–4,200 kWh/year from a 4kW system — 19% above the UK average — giving a typical payback of around 8.6 years solar-only, or 7.2 years with battery storage. Annual savings are typically £700–£1,000.
02
Do solar panels work on cloudy days in the UK?
Yes, solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine. They produce less on overcast days — typically 10–25% of peak output — but they still work. The UK gets enough sunlight for solar to be a sound investment, with average systems generating 3,500–4,500 kWh per year depending on location and roof orientation.
03
How many solar panels do I need?
The number of panels depends on your electricity usage and available roof space. A typical UK household uses 3,500–4,500 kWh per year, which a 10–12 panel system (4–5kW) can offset. If you're adding an EV charger or battery, you'll want a larger system. We assess your usage and roof during the free survey to recommend the right size.
04
What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for excess solar electricity you export to the grid. Best current rates (April 2026): Good Energy at 25p fixed, Octopus Intelligent Flux averaging ~25p (32p peak for battery owners), EDF Empower Export at 18p, and British Gas at 15.1p. We register you for the SEG as part of your installation. With a battery, you can store daytime solar generation and export strategically when rates are highest.
05
Will solar panels damage my roof?
No. Solar panels are mounted on rails attached to your roof battens with hooks that slide under existing tiles. No tiles are removed or drilled through. The mounting system is weatherproof and the panels actually protect the tiles beneath from rain and UV damage. We inspect your roof structure during the survey to confirm it can take the additional weight (around 20kg per panel).
