Solar Panel Installation for Falmouth Homes

Solar Panels in Falmouth: Premium Market, High Yields

Falmouth is Cornwall's largest deep-water harbour town with a population of around 22,500 and one of the most environmentally engaged communities in the South West. Home to Falmouth University, the National Maritime Museum, and the Pendennis Shipyard, the town has a deep maritime heritage and a strong contemporary appetite for renewable energy. CCS Heating & Renewables installs solar PV across TR11 from our Pool office — a 25-minute drive away.

Solar Generation Conditions in Falmouth

Falmouth receives approximately 1,290 kWh/m²/year of solar irradiance — around 19% above the UK average. The coastal aspect across Falmouth Bay gives most properties an excellent south or south-east exposure. A standard 4kWp system here generates 3,500–3,800 kWh annually; the larger 6–8kWp systems we typically install in Pendennis and Gyllyngvase frequently produce 5,500–7,000 kWh.

Best Property Types for Solar in Falmouth

  • Pendennis cliff-side homes: South-facing aspects across Falmouth Bay, large roofs, premium-spec installations of 6–10kWp paired with Tesla Powerwall 3 or Foxstar Pro batteries. Average property value here is well over £600,000 — the financial case for solar plus battery is exceptionally strong.
  • Gyllyngvase & Swanpool coastal terraces: Edwardian and Victorian terraces with rear-elevation roof access. South-east aspect, excellent generation. 4–6kWp typical.
  • The Moor & Killigrew Street Victorian terraces: Compact roofs but well-orientated. 3–4kWp arrays pair well with battery storage for high self-consumption.
  • Boslowick & Trescobeas estates: Inter-war and post-war semis with generous south-facing roof areas. 10–14 panel arrays standard. Excellent install-cost-to-yield ratio.
  • High Town Georgian properties (Arwenack Street, Church Street): Listed buildings — solar generally only permitted on rear roof slopes after listed building consent. CCS handles the planning application.

Conservation Area & Listed Building Considerations

Falmouth's historic high town is a designated conservation area, and many properties along Arwenack Street and Church Street are listed. Solar PV on the front elevation of these properties is generally not permitted, but rear-elevation installations are usually achievable with the correct paperwork. CCS Heating & Renewables prepares listed building consent applications and conservation area consent applications as part of the project. See our Cornwall planning guide for the full process.

Solar + Battery: The Falmouth Premium Sweet Spot

The premium properties at Pendennis, Gyllyngvase, and Maenporth have the roof area, the south-facing aspect, and the household electricity demand to make solar plus battery a standout investment. A 6kWp solar array with a 13.5kWh Tesla Powerwall 3 typically delivers self-consumption above 80% and total annual savings of £1,200–£1,800 at current prices. With SEG export tariffs from Octopus and EDF at 15–20p/kWh, summer surplus generation is also paid.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Solar Panels in Falmouth

01
How much do solar panels cost in the UK?
A typical 4kW residential solar panel system costs £6,000–£8,000 in Cornwall including installation and 0% VAT (saving you 20% on the total cost). A 6kW system costs £8,500–£12,000. Cornwall generates 3,800–4,200 kWh/year from a 4kW system — 19% above the UK average — giving a typical payback of around 8.6 years solar-only, or 7.2 years with battery storage. Annual savings are typically £700–£1,000.
02
Do solar panels work on cloudy days in the UK?
Yes, solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine. They produce less on overcast days — typically 10–25% of peak output — but they still work. The UK gets enough sunlight for solar to be a sound investment, with average systems generating 3,500–4,500 kWh per year depending on location and roof orientation.
03
How many solar panels do I need?
The number of panels depends on your electricity usage and available roof space. A typical UK household uses 3,500–4,500 kWh per year, which a 10–12 panel system (4–5kW) can offset. If you're adding an EV charger or battery, you'll want a larger system. We assess your usage and roof during the free survey to recommend the right size.
04
What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for excess solar electricity you export to the grid. Best current rates (April 2026): Good Energy at 25p fixed, Octopus Intelligent Flux averaging ~25p (32p peak for battery owners), EDF Empower Export at 18p, and British Gas at 15.1p. We register you for the SEG as part of your installation. With a battery, you can store daytime solar generation and export strategically when rates are highest.
05
Will solar panels damage my roof?
No. Solar panels are mounted on rails attached to your roof battens with hooks that slide under existing tiles. No tiles are removed or drilled through. The mounting system is weatherproof and the panels actually protect the tiles beneath from rain and UV damage. We inspect your roof structure during the survey to confirm it can take the additional weight (around 20kg per panel).
