Battery Storage for Padstow Homes

Battery Storage in Padstow: The Holiday-Let Economics

Padstow (PL28) is one of Cornwall's premier holiday destinations, and its housing stock reflects that — a high proportion of second homes and holiday lets around the harbour, plus 20th-century bungalows and modern detached properties at Trevone, St Merryn, Constantine Bay and Harlyn Bay. For a property earning letting income, every kilowatt-hour bought from the grid eats into the margin, which makes battery storage unusually attractive here. CCS Heating & Renewables installs Foxstar, Tesla Powerwall and FoxESS systems across the whole PL28 area from our Pool base, 20 miles away.

Summer Generation Meets Peak Occupancy

Padstow's letting season peaks in exactly the months solar generates most. At around 1,298 kWh/m2/year — roughly 19% above the UK average — a 5kWp array on a Padstow roof produces a strong summer surplus. Without a battery, most of that daytime generation is exported for a few pence while guests draw expensive grid power in the evening — cooking, showering, charging devices, running the TV. A 9.5–13.5kWh battery captures the daytime surplus and releases it into that evening peak, delivering near energy-independence in July and August and typically saving £500–£900 a year on a busy let.

Off-Gas Padstow: 88% and Rising

An exceptional 88% of Padstow homes are off the mains gas grid — almost the entire town runs on oil, LPG or electric heating, with a growing number of heat pumps. That makes the solar-plus-battery-plus-heat-pump stack especially powerful here: solar generates, the battery stores, and the heat pump heats the home and hot water from stored solar rather than costly grid electricity. For owner-occupiers in the older harbour cottages and the Trevone and St Merryn bungalows, it is the most effective way to cut a heating bill that would otherwise depend on volatile oil prices.

Coastal Siting & Equipment

  • Indoor mounting: batteries are installed in a garage, utility room or plant space, so the salt-laden Atlantic air at Harlyn and Constantine Bay never reaches the unit — only the rooftop solar needs marine-grade specification.
  • Holiday cottages & harbour properties: often listed or within the conservation area — we position equipment discreetly and handle any planning paperwork.
  • Second homes & modern detached: larger roofs and driveways suit combined solar, battery and EV charging in one visit.

One Visit, Maximum Return

For owners planning solar and an EV charger, adding a battery at the same time is the most cost-effective route — one installation visit, one set of DNO notifications, and no repeat scaffolding. Battery storage installed with solar carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, export is paid through the Smart Export Guarantee, and CCS handles the G99 DNO notification and MCS certification. For sizing and payback figures, see our guide to battery storage in Cornwall. We cover all of PL28 including Trevone, St Merryn, Constantine Bay and Harlyn Bay.

What Our Customers Say

Google
"Added a Foxstar battery to our existing solar panels. CCS fitted it in a single day and now we use almost all of our solar generation ourselves. The app monitoring is fantastic too — I can see exactly where every unit goes."

"Quick and professional EV charger installation. CCS recommended the Zappi so we can charge from our solar panels during the day. Saves us a fortune compared to public chargers, especially in summer."

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Battery Storage in Padstow

01
Is a battery worth it with solar panels?
A battery significantly increases the value of your solar panels. Without a battery, you typically use only 30–50% of the solar energy you generate — the rest is exported to the grid at 15–25p/kWh. With a battery, self-consumption rises to 70–90%, meaning you use your own free solar energy instead of paying 24.67p/kWh from the grid. A 9.5kWh battery system costs £4,500–£7,000 installed (at 0% VAT). In Cornwall, battery storage typically pays back in 5–7 years.
02
How long do home batteries last?
Modern lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) home batteries — including Foxstar and Tesla Powerwall — are warranted for 10 years and designed to last 15+ years. LiFePO4 chemistry is the safest, most stable battery chemistry available, with no thermal runaway risk and excellent long-term capacity retention.
03
Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?
Yes, batteries can be retrofitted to any existing solar PV system. We install AC-coupled battery systems (such as the Foxstar or Tesla Powerwall) alongside your current inverter, compatible with any solar system regardless of age. A retrofit typically takes 1 day and we handle all DNO notifications. The 0% VAT rate applies to battery storage installed alongside solar.
04
Can a battery provide backup power during a power cut?
Yes — some home batteries including the Tesla Powerwall and certain Foxstar configurations provide backup power during a grid outage, automatically switching to battery power when the grid fails. This is a particularly useful feature for rural properties in Cornwall where power cuts can occur. Not all batteries include backup as standard, so we advise on this when recommending a system.
05
What is the best battery to buy with solar panels?
Foxstar and Tesla Powerwall are our most frequently installed systems. Foxstar offers excellent value, strong UK customer support, and modular capacity. Tesla Powerwall has a sleeker design, excellent software, and strong backup power features. The right choice depends on your budget, whether backup power matters to you, and whether you want to expand capacity in future. We install both and provide impartial advice.
