myenergi Zappi EV Charger Installation in Cornwall

Zappi v2.1 — the UK's most-loved EV charger. Designed and manufactured in Stamford, Lincolnshire, with industry-leading solar diversion modes. CCS is a myenergi Pro Installer.

The myenergi Zappi is the UK's most popular home EV charger and the only one designed and built in Britain. CCS Heating & Renewables is a myenergi Pro Installer with full training across the current Zappi v2.1 platform, the Eddi solar diverter, the Libbi battery, and the Hub data gateway. Across Cornwall, we install Zappi for solar-PV-owning households who want to maximise self-consumption — the Zappi's three operating modes (Fast, Eco, Eco+) let you choose between immediate full-speed charging, solar-prioritised charging, or 100%-solar-only charging that pauses whenever cloud cover reduces generation. This solar diversion functionality is the Zappi's killer feature and the reason it dominates the solar-PV-aligned EV charger market in the UK. The current v2.1 model offers 7.4kW (single phase) and 22kW (three phase) outputs, tethered (5m or 6.5m cable) or untethered (Type 2 socket) configurations, and a colour LCD display. Every Zappi we install in Cornwall is OZEV-approved (qualifying for any future grant scheme reinstatement), DNO G99-notifiable for installations exceeding 16A per phase, fully compliant with the 2022 Smart Charge Point regulations (EVCP), and integrates with octopus.energy's Octopus Intelligent Go tariff for smart off-peak charging. From our Pool depot we cover all Cornish postcodes with typical install lead times of 1–2 weeks from order. Pricing starts at £999 fully installed for a 7.4kW Zappi v2.1 untethered, and £1,250 for the tethered version with 6.5m cable.

The three Zappi charging modes

The Zappi's defining feature is its three operating modes. Fast mode charges your EV at the maximum available rate (7.4kW or 22kW) using grid electricity — exactly like any conventional EV charger. Use this when you need a fast turnaround. Eco mode prioritises solar generation but tops up from the grid as needed to maintain a minimum charging speed (typically 1.4kW). It charges your EV as quickly as your solar generation allows, plus a small grid top-up. Eco+ mode is the purist's choice: it charges only from genuine solar surplus, pausing whenever cloud cover reduces generation below the minimum threshold. Eco+ delivers 100%-renewable EV charging at zero marginal cost.

For Cornish households with 5kW+ of solar PV, Eco+ mode typically delivers 60–80% of annual EV miles entirely from solar — worth £400–£800/year in fuel savings versus grid-only charging. CCS configures the optimal default mode based on your usage pattern during commissioning.

Octopus Intelligent Go integration

Octopus Intelligent Go is the UK's most popular smart EV tariff, offering 7p/kWh between 23:30 and 05:30 plus dynamically extended cheap windows when grid demand is low. The Zappi v2.1 integrates natively with Octopus Intelligent Go via the Hub gateway and Octopus's API, automatically scheduling overnight charging during the cheap window without homeowner intervention. Combined with daytime solar charging in Eco+ mode, this typically reduces EV running costs to under 2p per mile — roughly 1/8th the cost of petrol at current Cornish forecourt prices.

For households on Octopus Cosy or Flux instead of Intelligent Go, the Zappi schedules charging around the cheapest tariff windows automatically. CCS sets up the integration during commissioning.

Made in Britain — Stamford, Lincolnshire

myenergi designs and manufactures the Zappi at its purpose-built factory in Stamford, Lincolnshire. Every unit is made in the UK from largely UK-sourced components, supporting British manufacturing and providing genuinely fast warranty turnaround (typically 48-hour replacement for warranty defects from myenergi's Stamford warehouse). For Cornish customers who value British-made products and short supply chains, the Zappi is the obvious choice.

The UK manufacturing also means myenergi can offer British technical support during UK business hours from a Lincolnshire-based team — a meaningful advantage over imported alternatives where support routes via European or Asian call centres.

Tethered vs untethered — which to choose

Tethered Zappi units come with a fixed 5m or 6.5m Type 2 cable permanently attached. Pros: convenient (just plug in), cable can't be stolen, slightly cheaper. Cons: cable is exposed to weather, no flexibility for cable length. Untethered Zappi units have a Type 2 socket; you bring your own cable (which comes with the EV) and store it in the boot when not charging. Pros: cable protected indoors, easy to upgrade cable, looks tidier. Cons: extra step every charging session, cable can theoretically be stolen if left attached.

For most Cornish households we recommend tethered — the convenience outweighs the small aesthetic compromise, and the 6.5m cable reaches comfortably across most driveways. For homes with multiple EVs or where the charger is mounted at the boundary of the property, untethered is often better.

Cornish installation considerations

EV charger installations in Cornwall require careful design around several factors: distance from consumer unit (long cable runs are common in Cornish properties with detached garages), supply capacity (60A single-phase service is common in older rural properties — limiting how many heat pumps + EV chargers can run simultaneously), DNO notification (G99 application required for installations exceeding 16A per phase, which all 22kW three-phase Zappis trigger), and outdoor mounting in coastal salt-spray environments (the Zappi is IP65 rated for unsheltered outdoor installation in Cornish coastal conditions).

CCS handles the entire process: site survey, supply capacity check, optimal mounting location, cable routing, consumer unit modifications, RCBO/Type-A RCD addition (required by 18th Edition wiring regs for EV circuits), commissioning, and DNO notification where required. See our EV charger installation page for the full process.

myenergi Zappi FAQs

01
Will the Zappi work with my existing solar PV?
Yes — the Zappi works with any existing solar PV system. It uses CT clamps on your meter tails to detect solar export and divert that power to your EV. No solar inverter or panel changes needed.
02
Do I need three-phase power for a 22kW Zappi?
Yes — 22kW Zappi requires three-phase supply (32A per phase). Most Cornish homes have single-phase only. Check with CCS at survey — we can also arrange three-phase supply upgrade quotes via Western Power Distribution if needed.
03
How does Eco+ mode work on cloudy Cornish days?
When solar generation drops below the minimum charging threshold (typically 1.4kW), Eco+ mode pauses charging and resumes when generation recovers. On cloudy days you may get only intermittent charging — that's by design. For consistent fast charging in any weather, use Fast mode.
04
Is the Zappi compatible with Octopus Intelligent Go?
Yes — the Zappi v2.1 with Hub gateway integrates natively with Octopus Intelligent Go for automated cheap-window scheduling. CCS configures this during commissioning.
05
Can I install a Zappi without solar PV?
Yes — the Zappi works perfectly as a standard smart EV charger without solar. The Eco/Eco+ modes simply remain unused. Many CCS customers install Zappi first and add solar later, knowing the charger is ready.
06
What happens in a power cut?
The Zappi requires mains electricity to operate, so EV charging stops during a grid outage. For power-cut resilience, install the Zappi alongside a Tesla Powerwall 3 or SigenStor.
07
Is there a grant available?
The OZEV EVHS grant ended for owner-occupiers in March 2022, but the Zappi remains OZEV-approved for landlord and rental property installations (£350 grant available). The OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme also covers business installations at £350 per socket.
