Tesla Powerwall 3 Installation in Cornwall

The Powerwall 2 was a great product, but the Powerwall 3 is genuinely revolutionary. Three big changes: first, the integrated solar inverter — a single Powerwall 3 unit can directly accept up to 20kW of solar PV across six MPPT inputs, eliminating the need for a separate string inverter. Second, the doubled continuous AC output (11.5kW vs Powerwall 2's 5kW) means the Powerwall 3 can comfortably back up an entire Cornish home including a heat pump and EV charger running simultaneously. Third, the LFP cell chemistry replaces the Powerwall 2's NMC chemistry, providing safer thermal characteristics, longer cycle life (typically 6,000+ full cycles vs ~3,000 for NMC), and zero capacity degradation in cold weather.

For Cornish customers planning new solar plus storage installations, the Powerwall 3 is now the obvious choice. For existing solar customers adding storage to an established string-inverter system, the Powerwall 3 still works brilliantly in AC-coupled mode (charging from grid surplus and your existing solar export).

The Powerwall 3 supports both AC and DC coupling — the only major home battery to do so flexibly. DC coupling means your solar PV connects directly into the Powerwall 3's MPPT inputs, with the Powerwall handling both solar conversion and battery management. This is the most efficient configuration (around 97.5% round-trip vs 92% for AC-coupled), but requires that the Powerwall be installed alongside the solar PV from day one.

AC coupling means the Powerwall 3 sits alongside an existing solar inverter, charging from grid-tied AC and discharging back to AC. This is the right answer for retrofitting storage to existing solar installations — common in Cornwall where many homeowners installed PV in the 2010–2016 FIT era and are now adding batteries. The Powerwall 3, properly configured with a Tesla Backup Gateway, can island your home from the grid within 200 milliseconds of an outage and continue powering the entire property from stored energy plus any solar generation. With 11.5kW continuous AC output, a single Powerwall 3 can run a heat pump, fridge/freezer, lighting, IT equipment and a kettle simultaneously without trouble.
