Tesla Powerwall 3 Installation in Cornwall
Tesla Powerwall 3 — the most advanced home battery on the market. CCS is a Tesla Certified Installer for Cornwall, delivering integrated solar + storage in a single elegant unit.
The Tesla Powerwall 3, launched in the UK in 2024, marks a generational leap in residential battery storage. By integrating a 13.5kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery with a 11.5kW continuous AC inverter and an 11.04kW DC solar PV input in a single wall-mounted unit, the Powerwall 3 eliminates the need for a separate solar inverter — reducing component count, installation time, and long-term maintenance complexity. CCS Heating & Renewables is a Tesla Certified Installer for Cornwall, with the manufacturer credentials and engineering competencies needed to design, install and commission Powerwall 3 systems to Tesla's exacting standards. Every Powerwall 3 we install qualifies for 0% VAT under the green technologies relief running until March 2027, comes with a 10-year manufacturer warranty (one of the longest in the battery market), and is fully compatible with Cornwall's preferred electricity tariffs — Octopus Cosy, Octopus Flux, and Octopus Intelligent Go. The Powerwall 3 is particularly relevant in Cornwall because our long, sunny shoulder seasons (April–May and September–October) generate substantial solar surplus that, without storage, would simply be exported to the grid at 4–15p/kWh. With a Powerwall 3 storing daytime surplus and discharging during evening peak, typical Cornish solar customers reduce their grid electricity imports by 70–85% across the year. Combined with a heat pump and EV charger, the Powerwall 3 becomes the central control point of a fully integrated home energy system — and Tesla's exceptional smartphone app and cloud control make managing it genuinely effortless.

Powerwall 3 vs Powerwall 2 — what's new
The Powerwall 2 was a great product, but the Powerwall 3 is genuinely revolutionary. Three big changes: first, the integrated solar inverter — a single Powerwall 3 unit can directly accept up to 20kW of solar PV across six MPPT inputs, eliminating the need for a separate string inverter. Second, the doubled continuous AC output (11.5kW vs Powerwall 2's 5kW) means the Powerwall 3 can comfortably back up an entire Cornish home including a heat pump and EV charger running simultaneously. Third, the LFP cell chemistry replaces the Powerwall 2's NMC chemistry, providing safer thermal characteristics, longer cycle life (typically 6,000+ full cycles vs ~3,000 for NMC), and zero capacity degradation in cold weather.
For Cornish customers planning new solar plus storage installations, the Powerwall 3 is now the obvious choice. For existing solar customers adding storage to an established string-inverter system, the Powerwall 3 still works brilliantly in AC-coupled mode (charging from grid surplus and your existing solar export).
AC coupling vs DC coupling
The Powerwall 3 supports both AC and DC coupling — the only major home battery to do so flexibly. DC coupling means your solar PV connects directly into the Powerwall 3's MPPT inputs, with the Powerwall handling both solar conversion and battery management. This is the most efficient configuration (around 97.5% round-trip vs 92% for AC-coupled), but requires that the Powerwall be installed alongside the solar PV from day one.
AC coupling means the Powerwall 3 sits alongside an existing solar inverter, charging from grid-tied AC and discharging back to AC. This is the right answer for retrofitting storage to existing solar installations — common in Cornwall where many homeowners installed PV in the 2010–2016 FIT era and are now adding batteries. CCS designs each Powerwall 3 installation around your specific solar setup, recommending DC coupling for new installations and AC coupling for retrofits. See our battery storage page for more.
Whole-home backup during Cornish power cuts
Cornwall's exposed Atlantic coast means winter storms (Bertha, Ciara, Eunice, Babet — we've had a few) regularly bring extended power cuts to rural areas. The Powerwall 3, properly configured with a Tesla Backup Gateway, can island your home from the grid within 200 milliseconds of an outage and continue powering the entire property from stored energy plus any solar generation. With 11.5kW continuous AC output, a single Powerwall 3 can run a heat pump, fridge/freezer, lighting, IT equipment and a kettle simultaneously without trouble.
For larger Cornish properties or off-grid-leaning customers, multiple Powerwall 3 units can be paralleled — up to four units giving 54kWh storage and 46kW AC output. This makes Tesla the preferred storage choice for customers in Cornwall's most remote postcodes (PL30, PL35, TR12, TR19) where grid reliability is genuinely an issue.
Octopus Energy tariff integration
Octopus Energy's smart tariffs — Cosy, Flux, Intelligent Go — are particularly well suited to Powerwall 3 owners in Cornwall. On Octopus Flux, you can charge the Powerwall from cheap overnight grid (8.65p/kWh in 2026) and discharge during the 16:00–19:00 peak (33p/kWh export rate), capturing arbitrage of around 25p/kWh on every cycled kWh. Even without solar, this can pay for itself.
Tesla's app integrates with Octopus via the Octopus API, automatically scheduling charge/discharge cycles for tariff optimisation. CCS configures the Octopus integration during commissioning and provides setup guidance for whichever tariff suits your usage pattern best.
Installation in Cornwall
A Powerwall 3 installation typically takes one to two days. We mount the unit on an interior or exterior wall (Powerwall 3 is IP67 rated, so external installation is fine in Cornwall's wet climate), connect to your consumer unit via a dedicated MCB, install the Backup Gateway and Energy Meter, configure the Tesla app, and notify your DNO under G98 (single Powerwall) or G99 (multiple units). All G98 paperwork and DNO notification is handled by CCS. New solar PV installation alongside the Powerwall typically adds 2–3 additional days. See our battery storage page.
