Ohme EV Charger Installation in Cornwall

Ohme — the smart EV charger of choice for Octopus Intelligent Go customers. CCS installs the Home Pro and ePod across all of Cornwall.

Ohme has rapidly become one of the UK's leading smart EV chargers, particularly favoured by Octopus Energy customers because of its uniquely deep integration with the Octopus Intelligent Go tariff. Founded in 2017 and headquartered in London, Ohme is the official charger partner of Octopus Energy and the recommended OEM partner for major car manufacturers including Volvo, Polestar, Hyundai, Kia and MG. CCS Heating & Renewables is an Ohme Approved Installer covering all of Cornwall. We install across the current Ohme range: the Home Pro (premium tethered with colour LCD display, scheduling, app control and cellular connectivity), the ePod (compact wall-mounted untethered Type 2 socket), and the new Home Pro Plug-and-Charge (with Auto-Identify ISO 15118 compliance). Every Ohme we install is OZEV-approved (qualifying for any grant scheme reinstatement and currently for the £350 EVHS Landlord and Workplace Charging Scheme grants), 2022 EVCP Smart Charge Point regulation compliant, and supports octopus.energy's Intelligent Go, Cosy and Agile tariffs natively. Ohme's standout feature is true integration with the Octopus API: the charger talks directly to Octopus's grid demand-balancing system, dynamically extending cheap charging windows when grid demand is low (typically delivering 20–30% more cheap-window hours than a non-integrated charger). Ohme starts at £899 fully installed for the ePod untethered, and £1,150 for the Home Pro tethered with 5m cable.

Octopus Intelligent Go — Ohme's killer feature

Octopus Intelligent Go is the UK's leading smart EV tariff: 7p/kWh (May 2026 rate) between 23:30 and 05:30 every night, plus dynamically extended cheap windows when National Grid demand is low. The dynamic extension is where Ohme excels: as the official Octopus charger partner, Ohme communicates directly with Octopus's grid balancing system. When Octopus has surplus cheap renewable generation to dispatch (typically overnight wind), the cheap window extends earlier in the evening or later into the morning — and Ohme automatically schedules charging across the entire extended window without homeowner intervention.

The practical impact is significant. Octopus Intelligent Go customers using Ohme typically achieve 20–30% more cheap-window charging hours than equivalent customers using non-integrated chargers (which only know about the fixed 23:30–05:30 base window). For high-mileage Cornish drivers, this translates to £100–£200/year in additional savings versus equivalent generic smart chargers.

Home Pro vs ePod — choosing the right model

The Home Pro is Ohme's flagship: tethered (5m or 7.5m cable), large colour LCD display showing real-time charging status, scheduling, energy cost and grid carbon intensity, plus optional Plug-and-Charge ISO 15118 support for compatible vehicles. The ePod is the budget-friendly compact option: untethered Type 2 socket (bring your own cable), no display (everything controlled via the Ohme smartphone app), smaller wall footprint. Both share the same internal smart-charging electronics and Octopus integration — functionality is essentially identical, the difference is form factor and aesthetic preference.

For Cornish customers we typically recommend the Home Pro tethered for primary driveway installations (the LCD is genuinely useful, and tethered is more convenient day-to-day) and the ePod for secondary chargers or where wall space is constrained.

Solar PV integration

Ohme supports solar diversion via integration with compatible solar inverters and battery systems. While the Ohme's solar diversion is not as polished as the Zappi's three-mode system, it works well in conjunction with Octopus's smart tariffs and is being progressively enhanced via firmware updates. For solar-PV-heavy Cornish customers prioritising solar self-consumption, we still typically recommend Zappi. For Octopus Intelligent Go customers prioritising tariff arbitrage, Ohme is the clear winner.

The Ohme also integrates with home batteries for whole-home energy management — particularly relevant for our growing number of Cornish customers installing Tesla Powerwall 3, Fox ESS or Sigenergy batteries alongside their EV charger.

Cellular connectivity — no Wi-Fi required

One under-appreciated Ohme advantage is built-in cellular connectivity (4G). Unlike most smart chargers that require home Wi-Fi for smart features, the Ohme has its own cellular SIM and internet connection — meaning it works perfectly in detached garages, boundary-mounted positions, or rural Cornish properties where Wi-Fi signal doesn't reach the charger location. This is particularly valuable in older Cornish homes with thick granite walls where Wi-Fi coverage is patchy.

Cellular connectivity is included in the unit price for the first 5 years; an optional extension is available beyond that. We've never had a Cornish customer reach the 5-year limit yet — but it's worth noting for long-term planning.

Cornwall installations and DNO process

CCS handles every aspect of Ohme installation in Cornwall: site survey, supply capacity check, optimal mounting position, cable routing, consumer unit modification with Type-A RCD/RCBO addition, commissioning, app setup, Octopus tariff integration, and DNO notification where required. Most Ohme installations are 7.4kW single-phase and fall under the simplified G98 DNO notification process — CCS submits this entirely on your behalf, no homeowner action required.

For three-phase 22kW Ohme installations (less common, requires three-phase grid supply), G99 application is needed and takes 4–8 weeks for DNO approval. CCS handles this too. See our EV charger installation page for the full process.

Ohme FAQs

01
Why choose Ohme over Zappi?
Ohme wins decisively for Octopus Intelligent Go customers because of its native API integration and dynamic cheap-window extension. Zappi wins for solar-PV-heavy households prioritising self-consumption. Both are excellent; the right choice depends on your tariff and PV setup.
02
Does Ohme work in Cornish properties without home Wi-Fi at the garage?
Yes — Ohme has built-in 4G cellular connectivity, so it works without home Wi-Fi. Particularly useful for detached garages or properties with thick granite walls where Wi-Fi doesn't reach.
03
Is Ohme officially recommended by Octopus Energy?
Yes — Ohme is Octopus's official residential charger partner and is the recommended hardware for Octopus Intelligent Go customers. The integration is genuinely deeper than competitor chargers.
04
Can I install Ohme without Octopus Energy?
Yes — Ohme works as a standard smart EV charger on any electricity tariff. The Octopus integration is the standout feature but not a requirement. Ohme also integrates with E.ON Drive and other smart tariffs.
05
What's Plug-and-Charge?
Plug-and-Charge (ISO 15118) lets compatible vehicles authenticate themselves to the charger automatically — no app, RFID card or PIN needed. Just plug in and charging starts. Available on the Ohme Home Pro Plus model.
06
Is Ohme weatherproof for Cornish coastal locations?
Yes — IP54 (Home Pro) and IP65 (ePod) ratings are suitable for outdoor coastal installation in Cornwall. We typically mount under eaves or in slightly sheltered positions where possible.
07
Do you handle the DNO notification?
Yes — CCS handles G98 (single-phase) or G99 (three-phase) DNO notification entirely on your behalf. Most installs are G98 fast-track and require no homeowner action.
