Refrigerant R32
A single-component HFC refrigerant with GWP 675, widely used in mid-range air source heat pumps as a lower-impact replacement for R410A.
R32 is a hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential of 675, roughly one-third of the older R410A it replaced. Daikin Altherma 3, Mitsubishi Ecodan PUZ-WM and Panasonic Aquarea J-Series are common R32 units we install in Cornwall.
R32 offers good thermodynamic performance (slightly higher COP than R410A) and lower charge sizes, but it is mildly flammable (A2L classification). That means installers must follow F-Gas Regulation 517/2014 handling rules and there are charge-limit calculations for indoor units. For outdoor monobloc systems this is a non-issue.
If you have a choice, our recommendation for new installs in 2026 is R290 over R32. R290 has a GWP of just 3 and supports higher flow temperatures (up to 75°C) without efficiency loss, which is helpful for older Cornish properties retaining cast-iron radiators. See our heat pump installation page for refrigerant guidance.
