Untethered (EV charger)
An EV charger with a Type 2 socket but no captive cable — you bring your own cable from the car boot for each charge.
An untethered EV charger has a Type 2 socket on the unit and you bring your own cable. Most EVs come with a Type 2-to-Type 2 "granny" cable in the boot, so no extra purchase is usually needed.
Pros of untethered: cleaner appearance on the wall (no dangling cable), longer-lasting unit (no cable wear), more flexible for shared use across different cars and connector orientations. Cons: faff of unrolling the cable for every charge, risk of cable theft from the car if forgotten, and the unit is slightly more expensive (around £50-100 more for socket variant).
Examples include Ohme Home Pro, Hypervolt Home 3.0 (socket variant), Andersen A2, EO Mini Pro 3 and Wallbox Pulsar Max. See our EV charger installation page or call 01209 596 002.
