Home EV charger installation in Penzance

CCS Heating & Renewables installs smart home EV chargers throughout Penzance and the TR18/TR19 area - the town centre, Chapel Street, Morrab Road, Penlee, Heamoor, Newlyn, Mousehole, Marazion, Long Rock and Gulval. As an MCS-certified Cornwall installer rated 5.0 from 14 Google reviews with over 200 installs, we bring far-west drivers a properly local service.

Chargers we fit

  • Zappi - the solar owner's charger, diverting daytime generation into the car.
  • Ohme - designed around cheap overnight EV tariffs.
  • Easee - compact and load-balancing, good on narrow cottage frontages.

Penzance's mix of streets

Penzance is the main town of the Penwith peninsula, and its housing runs from grand Georgian and Regency townhouses on Chapel Street and Morrab Road, much of it within an extensive conservation area, to the tightly packed granite fishermen's cottages of Newlyn and Mousehole. In these older, on-street areas we assess each property honestly, route cabling discreetly on period frontages, and explain the realistic options where there's no driveway. Head to Heamoor, Gulval, Long Rock and the modern estates and most homes have off-street parking, making a 7kW wall charger simple to fit.

Built for the coast

At the far west of the mainland, Penzance takes the full force of Atlantic weather and salt-laden air. We site chargers in sheltered positions where possible and select suitably weather-rated units for seafront and harbour-facing homes at Newlyn, Mousehole and along the promenade.

Charge from solar

Penzance sits in one of the sunniest spots in Britain, with irradiance around 1,050-1,100 kWh/kWp - roughly 19% above the UK average. A Zappi paired with panels lets you charge on free daytime solar. To add panels alongside your charger, see our solar panel installation service.

Compliant wiring and grants

Every install runs on a dedicated circuit with correct RCD protection and DNO notification where required, all to Part P of the Building Regulations. As the gateway to the Isles of Scilly, Penzance has plenty of flats and rented homes, and the OZEV EV chargepoint grant may help cover a socket for renters and flat occupiers - we'll confirm your eligibility at a free survey.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About EV Chargers in Penzance

01
How much does a home EV charger cost to install?
A home EV charger typically costs £850–£1,300 fully installed. Popular models include the Zappi (which can divert solar energy to your car), Ohme Home Pro, and Easee One. Installation usually takes half a day. The OZEV grant (£500) is £500 per socket since 1 April 2026 and is for flats, renters, landlords and on-street residents — not homeowners with a driveway. If you have solar panels, a smart charger like the Zappi can charge your car using free solar energy during the day.
02
Can I charge my electric car using solar panels?
Yes — and it is one of the most cost-effective EV charging options available. A smart EV charger like the Zappi or Ohme can detect when your solar panels are generating surplus electricity and automatically divert it to charge your car. On a sunny day, this means effectively free car charging. Customers with solar and a smart EV charger typically source 50–70% of their car charging from solar throughout the year.
03
What electricity tariff should I use with a home EV charger?
If you don't have solar panels, an EV-specific off-peak tariff can save significantly on charging costs. Tariffs like Octopus Intelligent and Octopus Go offer rates as low as 7–10p/kWh overnight, compared to the standard rate of 24.67p/kWh (Ofgem Q2 2026). Smart chargers like the Ohme and Zappi integrate directly with these tariffs to schedule charging automatically. If you have solar, a time-of-use tariff combined with smart charging means you can charge cheaply from the grid overnight and from free solar during the day.
04
Can I still get a government grant for a home EV charger in Cornwall?
Only in specific circumstances. The scheme that paid homeowners closed in March 2022. What remains is the OZEV chargepoint grant at £500 per socket — the rate for every OZEV chargepoint grant since 1 April 2026 — for renters and flat owner-occupiers, for landlords, and for households with no off-street parking through the on-street residential scheme. Businesses claim £500 per socket for up to 40 sockets under the Workplace Charging Scheme. The work must be done and claimed by an OZEV-authorised installer. If you own a house with a driveway, assume no grant and judge the quote on its own merits.
05
Is a 7kW charger worth it over a 3kW one?
For almost every Cornwall household, yes. At 3.5 miles per kWh — typical for a mid-size EV — a 7.4kW charger returns roughly 25 miles of range per hour against about 10 from a 3kW unit, so a seven-hour off-peak window is the difference between around 175 miles and around 70. 22kW needs a three-phase supply, which is uncommon in Cornish homes outside farms and converted commercial buildings.
