Vaillant aroTHERM Plus Heat Pump Installation in Cornwall

Vaillant aroTHERM plus — German engineering, R290 propane refrigerant, and the option to hybridise with an existing gas boiler. CCS is Cornwall's Vaillant Advance Installer.

Vaillant has been building heating systems in Germany since 1874, and the aroTHERM plus is the company's flagship air source heat pump for the UK retrofit market. What sets aroTHERM plus apart is its use of R290 propane refrigerant — a natural hydrocarbon with a global warming potential of just 3 (versus R32 at 675 and the obsolete R410A at 2,088). R290 enables flow temperatures up to 75°C without the COP penalty competitor refrigerants suffer at high temperatures, making it the standout choice for retrofitting onto Cornwall's older radiator systems originally sized around oil or gas boiler flow regimes. CCS Heating & Renewables is a Vaillant Advance Installer — the highest accreditation tier — meaning our engineers complete annual factory training at Vaillant's Belper academy, our installations qualify for Vaillant's full extended warranty programme, and we have direct technical escalation to Vaillant's UK engineering team. Every aroTHERM plus we install in Cornwall is MCS-certified, qualifies for the full £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, is zero-rated for VAT, and comes with Vaillant's 7-year parts and labour warranty (extending to 10 years on certain models with annual servicing). For households with an existing gas combi or system boiler not yet ready for replacement, the aroTHERM plus also supports hybrid configurations — the only major brand in our line-up that does so out of the box. This makes it ideal for phased decarbonisation projects, particularly in larger Cornish properties where the heat pump handles base load while the gas boiler covers peak winter demand.

R290 propane — why refrigerant choice matters

The European F-gas regulation phasedown is steadily restricting high-GWP refrigerants. R32, the current industry default, remains permitted for residential heat pumps but faces gradually rising costs and may eventually be restricted in service applications. R290 propane (GWP 3) is exempt from F-gas restrictions, charged in much smaller quantities than R32, and delivers superior thermodynamic performance at the high flow temperatures common in retrofit. Vaillant aroTHERM plus uses R290 across its entire range (3.5kW to 12kW), making it the most future-proof refrigerant choice on the UK market today.

For homeowners, the practical benefit is straightforward: an aroTHERM plus can deliver 75°C flow temperatures and 65°C domestic hot water at SCOP figures of 3.5 — performance that R32 systems can match only at significantly lower flow temperatures. In a typical Cornish granite cottage with cast-iron radiators sized around 70°C boiler flow, this means we can often install an aroTHERM plus without replacing a single radiator.

The hybrid configuration option

For larger Cornish properties — five-bedroom farmhouses near Padstow, Edwardian villas in Truro, or commercial premises like B&Bs and holiday lets — full heat pump conversion sometimes hits practical limits. Either heat loss is too high for a single heat pump to cover the coldest peak day economically, or grid supply capacity (a real issue in rural Cornwall, where 60A single-phase service is common) limits how large a heat pump can be installed. In these cases, the aroTHERM plus hybrid configuration shines.

In hybrid mode, the aroTHERM plus runs as the primary heat source covering perhaps 80% of annual heating demand, with an existing or new Vaillant ecoTEC plus gas boiler providing top-up heat on the coldest days and during peak DHW draws. Vaillant's vrnetDIALOG controls intelligently switch between sources based on outside temperature and current electricity-vs-gas pricing — minimising running costs without homeowner intervention. Hybrid systems also qualify for the £7,500 BUS grant on the heat pump component, and avoid the cost of grid supply upgrades.

Installation across Cornwall

CCS handles aroTHERM plus installations from Bude to Penzance and everywhere in between. Typical installation takes 3–5 days depending on whether existing pipework needs upsizing and whether the cylinder cupboard requires modification. Vaillant supplies the matching uniSTOR plus pre-plumbed cylinder (180L, 200L or 300L) which integrates seamlessly with the aroTHERM plus controller. We always size cylinders one increment larger than the absolute minimum — Cornwall's mild climate means heat pumps run efficiently year-round, but oversized cylinders give better resilience during power cuts (not uncommon in rural areas after Atlantic storms).

Our quotation includes the full BUS grant submission, MCS commissioning paperwork, Building Control Part L compliance certificate, and registration of your warranty with Vaillant UK. See our heat pump installation page for the full process.

aroTHERM plus performance in Cornish conditions

Vaillant publishes ErP-tested SCOP figures of 5.0 at 35°C flow and 3.5 at 55°C flow under Average climate conditions (Strasbourg test reference). Cornwall's milder climate — average winter mean temperature around 7°C versus Strasbourg's 4°C — typically delivers 5–10% better real-world SCOP than the headline figures. Our monitored aroTHERM plus installations in Cornwall consistently log SCOP between 4.0 and 4.6 at 45°C design flow temperatures.

Acoustically, the aroTHERM plus 5kW operates at 32 dB(A) at 1m in night-mode. Vaillant's Ultra-Quiet operation reduces fan speed during quiet hours (configurable), which we typically set to 22:00–07:00 to ensure neighbour-friendly operation in tight Cornish villages. The all-weather steel cabinet is rated for coastal salt-spray environments — important for installations within 5km of the Cornish coast.

Combining aroTHERM plus with solar PV and batteries

Vaillant's vrnetDIALOG controller has a smart-grid input that responds to PV inverter signals, boosting cylinder temperature during solar surplus to store excess generation as heat. Combined with a Fox ESS or SigenStor hybrid battery, you can shift the heat pump's daytime electricity demand into stored solar — typically reducing grid imports by 35–50% across the year in Cornwall.

For EV-owning households, we often pair Vaillant heat pumps with an myenergi Zappi or Ohme charger, allowing the whole-house energy system to optimise self-consumption automatically.

Vaillant aroTHERM plus FAQs

01
Is R290 propane safe inside my home?
Yes. The R290 charge is contained entirely within the outdoor unit — no refrigerant pipework enters the property. The propane charge is small (under 1.5kg even on the largest models) and the unit is engineered to ATEX standards. R290 is the same refrigerant used in millions of European fridges and freezers.
02
Can I run the aroTHERM plus alongside my existing gas boiler?
Yes — Vaillant's hybrid configuration is one of the platform's standout features. The aroTHERM plus handles base load efficiency while your existing or new ecoTEC plus boiler covers peak demand. Particularly useful for larger Cornish properties or homes where electricity grid capacity is limited.
03
Why does flow temperature matter?
Higher flow temperatures mean smaller radiators can deliver enough heat — useful for retrofits where you want to keep existing radiators. The aroTHERM plus's 75°C capability lets us avoid radiator upsizing on around 80% of Cornish retrofits.
04
How does the 7-year warranty work?
Vaillant provides 7 years parts and labour from commissioning, conditional on annual servicing by a Vaillant-accredited engineer. As an Advance Installer, CCS qualifies, and our service contracts start at £165/year.
05
Will it work in a power cut?
Like all heat pumps, the aroTHERM plus needs mains electricity to operate. For homes wanting power-cut resilience, we install it alongside a Tesla Powerwall 3 or Fox ESS battery with backup capability.
06
Does the aroTHERM plus qualify for the BUS grant?
Yes — every model in the range is MCS-certified and qualifies for the full £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which CCS deducts from your invoice at point of sale.
07
Is Vaillant UK-supported?
Yes. Vaillant has a UK head office in Belper, Derbyshire, with full UK technical support and parts distribution. As Advance Installers, CCS has direct technical escalation access.
